Karen Trace works primarily as a mediator and facilitator but also maintains a traditional legal practice in employment, intellectual property, commercial and collaborative family law. With respect to Alternate Dispute Resolution, Karen has conducted hundreds of mediations in a wide variety of matters including oil and gas, corporate, employment, personal injury and matrimonial. Karen welcomes inquiries from those who are seeking to better understand all of the options for resolving their dispute in order to select an appropriate resolution process.
Karen is committed to transforming society's traditional view of litigation and dispute resolution. For the past 10 years, she has designed and conducted Legal Education Society of Alberta seminars for lawyers who want to learn mediation skills. She has also conducted private mediation training for a number of federal and provincial government departments and agencies. Karen has also assisted in the design and implementation of the Provincial Court Civil and Queen's Bench Court mediation programs. She previously co-chaired the Mediation and Restorative Justice Centre and participated in the Alberta Law Reform Institute Rules of Court project addressing alternate dispute resolution.
Karen is an avid traveler and cyclist and combines these passions while cycle touring in Europe, Canada and the United States. She also enjoys alpine and nordic skiing.
