Legal Assistant – Litigation/Employment

McCuaig Desrochers has a full-time legal assistant opportunity to join our team working with two of our Associates practicing in various types of litigation and employment law.  This position involves both assistant and paralegal work.

Position Overview:

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following core duties:

  • Provide comprehensive legal administrative support, including drafting, compiling, and coordinating correspondence, legal documents, and pleadings
  • Assist with preparation for court applications, questionings, hearings, mediations and trials
  • Manage timelines for court filings
  • Regular contact with clients and handle new client intakes
  • Prepare client accounts and follow up on receivables
  • Perform complex editing and formatting for correspondence and documents
  • Document management duties including filing, limitation and diary system
  • Building a positive rapport with staff, lawyers and clients
  • Follow instructions and be able to thrive in a professional team environment

Key Qualifications and Education:

In addition to experience with the above, the candidate would have the following background, skills and experience:

  • Post-secondary education from a recognized Legal Assistant or Paralegal program
  • Minimum of three years of experience working in a litigation and/or employment legal assistant role
  • Has a high level of accuracy and strong attention to detail
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • The ability to prioritize work and meet tight deadlines
  • A positive, self-starter attitude with the ability to take initiative
  • A high level of professionalism while working closely with lawyers, staff and clients

The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced lawyer with 3+ years of call to join our team, practising in one or more of the following areas:

  • Corporate/Commercial & Business Law — business sales and acquisitions, shareholder agreements, corporate reorganizations, commercial contracts
  • Wills & Estates — estate planning, estate administration, trust work, powers of attorney, personal directives
  • Real Estate — residential and commercial transactions, land development, commercial leasing

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor or LLB degree from an accredited law school,
  • Active membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta or equivalent Canadian accreditation,
  • 3+ years of experience in corporate/commercial, wills and estates, and/or real estate law
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills,
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills,
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines, and
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset — you’ll be working closely with partners, associates, and support staff alike
