Megan Dawson joined McCuaig Desrochers LLP as an associate in July of 2012 after articling with the firm, and became a partner in 2018. She practices primarily in immigration and family law, and some adult guardianship and trusteeship matters. Megan was born and raised in Edmonton and completed a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology at the University of Alberta in 2007 and a Bachelor of Laws at the University of Alberta in 2011. She has represented clients at all levels of court in Alberta in family law matters, as well as before the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada. While Megan sees the great benefit of alternative dispute resolution and negotiating bespoke and fair settlements with her clients as a primary goal, she is equally prepared to advocate for her clients and their children or families in court or arbitration when needed, and before administrative tribunals for immigration matters.
Megan is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and regularly attends various section events and educational sessions. She is a past chair and current member of the executive of the Immigration Law (Alberta North) section of the Canadian Bar Association. Megan was formerly the Family Law Coordinator of Student Legal Services of Edmonton, and a student dayleader from 2009 to 2011 while in law school, assisting the low-income community in Edmonton with access to the civil justice system for various legal issues. She sat on the Board of Directors of Student Legal Services for 9 years and holds the organization very dear. She also volunteers with the Edmonton Community Legal Centre.
Prior to attending law school, Megan worked as a private investigator for nearly a year in the insurance/personal injury industry. She also gained a passion for books and reading growing up working in her mother’s local bookstore, where you could find her selling books and reading on the job over the years.
Outside of the office, Megan enjoys reading and podcasts, the odd “trashy” reality TV show and true crime or historical documentaries, attempting to draw and paint, hiking and skiing (both very poorly and casually), and spending time with her family and tiny dog, Sumo.
